Ways To Make Meaningful Change In Your Life

So here we go, another seasonal shift in New England. Autumn presents another opportunity to reflect on and reevaluate what’s been working in your life and what could use an overhaul … or at least a tweak.

First thing to do is ask yourself whether you want anything about your life to change. Chances are the answer is yes, since most of us can identify better ways to modify our approach to our health, routines, or behaviors. So assuming you’re saying yes, it’s time to really commit to the changes you’re seeking. Easier said than done, I know; but commitment is the engine of change.

Obviously, we’re all individuals on our own journeys. As Mr. Rogers used to tell us, “Everyone is different in their own way.” So your efforts may not be focused on the same things as those of your partner, your friend, or the person next door. Nothing wrong with that; this is about you!

A good way to start could be by making reasonable resolutions. Certainly changing your routines can deliver other kinds of positive changes. For example: maybe, starting this fall, you could start cooking more at home (the financial and health benefits will be quickly apparent). Or perhaps becoming more mindful that taking breaks during your day could be good for you. Have you addressed the fact that you often gasp for breath when climbing the cellar stairs? Do you fear for your back when picking up your nephew? Have you wanted, for some time, to lose the muffin top? These are just off-the-top-of-my-head thoughts. I’m sure you have many more.

So, is there a secret to changing behavior? Darned if I know, but I’ve been giving some thought to this question.  Maybe in the suggestions below we’ll hit on something that works for you. Presenting 10 ways to truly change behavior:

  1. You need to make a conscious decision that you want something to be different.
  2. You may need support or feedback to help identify your “blind spots.”
  3. Do a 30-day “challenge” of some kind in order to gain momentum and motivation.
  4. Establish at a daily routine.
  5. Be publicly accountable, if you dare (one good use for social media!).
  6. Be kind to yourself—change can be challenging.
  7. Fulfill your basic needs. Deprivation isn’t necessary to achieve your objectives.
  8. Read more.
  9. Create ways for people to reach out to you.
  10. Jump-start each day by asking yourself, “How can I change my life today?”.

We all need to acknowledge the one true constant: life keeps changing. Be sure in your efforts to identify changes that you find ones that work for you—and not against you. Many of us are simply trying to keep our heads above water, so change can seem random or the result of “life happening.” But take a moment to realize that if you make a few conscious choices (and stick with them), they may have long-lasting impact.
