OMG—do I love my bed! (I mean I really do!)  How many of you can say that and actually mean it? With all due respect, I’m guessing not many.

So what if the act of buying a new bed could immediately address your lack of sleep, which might be your number one health care issue?

But how do you know when to take the plunge and buy a new mattress?  Here’s the thing: if you are not getting restful sleep because of tossing and turning, or if you wake up with aches and pains, buying a new one could be just the answer. (And if it’s been years since you last bought a mattress, you’ll be amazed at the array of options, choices, and prices offered you.)

From The Huffington Post
“Worn or sagging spots in the middle of your mattress or at the edges are physical signs your mattress has seen better days, according to recommendations from the National Sleep Foundation (NSF)—and you should be able to sleep undisturbed on your side of the bed when your partner rolls over or gets up in the middle of the night. Though there is no hard-and-fast rule on how long to keep a mattress, most have a lifespan of about eight years, according to the NSF.”

Did you realize that in the course of our 24-hour day, many of us spend one third of those hours in bed?  Despite all the talking I do about exercise, I’m now realizing it’s often where we really put in our time—i.e. sleeping—that truly matters. Furthermore, I notice that for a number of my clients getting a new bed every 8-10 years isn’t high on their list of priorities. I’m saying that kind of inertia is at least short sighted and possibly even detrimental to overall health.

More than a gym membership or new sneakers or a personal trainer—a new bed can prevent strain on the connective tissues that hold neck and shoulders in place. Hips and back alignment could also benefit. Especially as we age (blah!) please consider a new BED purchase; you’ll even have fun trying one out in the store—pillow-top, inner spring, memory foam, Sleep Number, gel, hybrid, latex—try them all! 🙂
