I have a friend who generously gave me a new Fitbit. You might have thought I would already have one…

Anyway—this thing is cool, a marvelous device— and I rarely suggest or promote products to others.

Fortunately, it’s so easy to set up, (I promise it is, but YouTube helps with everything for those who need an image to make set-up easier).  Once you’ve got it set up, your Fitbit tells you these things:

  1. # of steps per day
  2. heart rate every second
  3. miles walked so far that day
  4. calories burned so far that day
  5. and number of aerobic minutes (those at a high heart rate)

It also has choices of ways to program the device that relate to your specific needs—perhaps weight loss or more movement. You can prompt it to prompt you based on your goals. For example, if you’ve been sitting for a long time (bad choice, by the way—“sitting is the new smoking”), the Fitbit says, with a text or the vibrate option, things like “Get up and move!” Aside from daily information, it also sends you your week’s stats in comparison to last week’s stats. It’s very motivating.

No, I don’t work for Fitbit, and I do think there may be other ways besides devices to keep this info alive and available in the course of your day.  But that said, I am so impressed with the simplicity of this technology.

If you are able to motivate yourself fairly easily, this Fitbit thing could work wonders during all your activities. For others not quite there yet, you may need a little coaching or a support team to get you jump-started before making this purchase. In any case, I highly recommend this device.
