PROVINCETOWN — Three residents being followed by the Times in the 12-week Provincetown Fitness Challenge made it through their first week of better eating and more exercise.

Kathleen Fitzgerald, Austin Knight and Dan McKeon are among 100 residents who joined the self-guided program, which began Jan. 16 and ends April 7.

Personal trainer Denise Gaylord organized the event, and participants work out at local gyms and health studios and keep track of their progress and goals in individual journals.

“My biggest challenge (is) planning the night before when I will do my workouts and when and what I will eat for my meals,” Fitzgerald said Thursday. “Hopefully I will become better at that as I go. But I’m feeling better and stronger every day. I am pushing myself in my workouts, and I am much more conscious of what I’m eating. No more pretzel snacks, no more bowls of ice cream. We just made a Super Stop & Shop (visit) yesterday to stock up on fresh produce and protein bars for the week.”

The Times will continue to follow the progress of Fitzgerald, Knight and McKeon through the program.
